We offer you to make an unforgettable guided private tour of Saint-Petersburg of one of the most brilliant palaces in our beautiful city.
The family of Prince Yusupov was the richest in the country after the tzar family before the communist revolution. This palace on the Moika river was their residence in the capital where the family spent the greater part of the year. They received here members of the high society, of Russian and European nobility, diplomats from foreign countries and high-ranking servicemen. Contemporaries were impressed by Yusupov’s balls and parties, their admirable feasts were often described by journalists.
The mansion on the Moika river is full of luxurious furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearls, ebony, tortoiseshell and colored metals or decorated with Florentine mosaics. Yusupovs bought for it chandeliers, candelabra, Sevres porcelain vases, skillfully woven Persian and French carpets, artistic bronzes by famous Thomire brothers and mantelpiece clocks by outstanding European craftsmen. The fireplaces were produced abroad and made of jasper, onyx and marble. Prince Nickolay Yusupov Jr bought in Europe many works of art, pieces of marble sculpture, paintings, old musical instruments.
You must remember that Yusupov Palace is well-known worldwide not only because of its beauty but also in the cellar of this building famous Grigory Rasputin was assassinated by the youngest of the family – Felix Yusupov. This bloody drama happened during the night of December 17, 1916 and influenced the course of Russian history. Nowadays politicians, journalists and researchers come back to Rasputin’s historical phenomenon and the mystery of his life and death. Some previously unknown facts have been revealed lately and new even sensational versions put forward.
It is natural that after the years of Communism and the siege there are not as many painting, statues and masterpieces of decorative art in the exhibition rooms of the palace as there used to be. Nevertheless, it still produces a strong impression on its visitors.
