The siege of Leningrad (the Soviet name of Saint-Petersburg) during the Second World War was the hardest time of our city ever. That time Russian people would remember forever. Nowadays not so many people left who were the eyewitnesses of the war and can tell about the siege and war firsthand. The memory of that difficult time goes from generation to generation. Each year on 9th of May we celebrate Victory Day. If you are in Saint-Petersburg this day you can be impressed with the number of people on the streets.
The WWII broke out for our country on 22nd June 1941. Hitler planned to take Leningrad by storm in the first days of the war. Then from here he wanted to go to Moscow. Thanks to the fortitude and courage of not only soldiers but also the city residents during Leningrad Siege Hitler’s troops never entered it. On 8th September 1941 the last railway connecting Leningrad with the rest of the country was cut off. Our city was isolated from the mainland. The siege started. It lasted for nine hundred days. In spite of all the hardships life went on. Schools, theaters, libraries were functioning. One of the Russian composers Dmitry Shostakovich who stayed in the city during siege wrote his “9th symphony”. It was first played in the besieged Leningrad. Almost a half of the population of Leningrad died here under the bombardments and of starvation, but they didn’t give up.
In their memory and the siege of Leningrad a lot of monuments and museums were opened in the city later.
