This non-standard tour of Saint-Petersburg we are going to describe is called Russian Picnic. Believe me it will be one of the most pleasant experiences in your life!
Firstly, to arrange a picnic we will have to visit a supermarket or a farmers’ market to buy everything we need for the picnic. Then we are driving out of the city to find a nice place for the picnic in the country. When the place is found we need to clear it and collect some wood for the fire. While preparing everything you may have some alcohol, a tin of beer or hot tea or coffee from the thermos.
As gas grills are not very popular here and quite expensive we usually use “mangal” for the picnic. This is a small grill on legs that is made of sheet metal. It is used to make the most popular barbeque meal here – “shashlyk”. To make it we need special skewers called “shampurs”. Every shampur is made of a long piece of narrow sheet metal, maybe a half inch wide. One end is cut at an angle, forming a sharp point, the other end is curled into a loop for hanging during storage. Although the center section is flat and straight, both ends, for about the final three inches are spiraled. They stay in place when you rotate them, this rotation guarantees you evenly cooked shashlyk – pieces of meat (the kind of meat you choose) and marinated onion on the skewers. Shashlyk is made not in the flame but a little bit above the bed of coals. During the cooking process we tell funny stories and may have some drinks alcohol or non-alcohol according to your choice. When shashlyk is ready it is usually served with vegetables and a lot of greens. We serve and eat shashlyk there in the country. It will be accompanied by fresh bread, vegetables, greens, cheese, wine or maybe beer. Going on a picnic is very Russian and unforgettable experience.
