The history of Fabergé Museum Saint-Petersburg, Russia started in 2004 when a collection of works by Fabergé House was acquired by Russian businessmen Viktor Vekselberg. It was bought from successors of American media magnate Malcolm Forbes who was a passionate collector of Fabergé works. That year the foundation «Links of time» was established. The mission of the foundation is to return to Russia lost valuables.
The museum was made in Shuvalov Palace that was built at the end of the 18 century. The palace had been renovated for seven years specially to house a new museum. Fabergé Museum was officially opened in the end of 2013. Nowadays the museum houses more than 4000 pieces of art. They are not only works by Carl Fabergé. Among them there are paintings, porcelain, icons, enamels etc.
Fabergé Museum has 200 works by Carl Fabergé among them nine famous Imperial Easter eggs. It is the second largest Fabergé egg collection in the world. All of them are displayed in Blue Drawing Room.
The first Easter egg was presented to Maria Fedorovna by her husband Alexander III in 1885. She loved that egg so much that it became a nice tradition and each year she got a new Easter egg made by Fabergé. That year Carl Fabergé became a court jeweler. Russian Emperor Alexander III could presented only 10 Easter eggs to his wife as he died in 1894. Nicolas II who was his successor took the tradition. But each year he ordered two eggs to Fabergé House one for his mother and another one for his wife. Thus by 1917 there were almost 50 Imperial Easter eggs. Unfortunately during Soviet time most of them were sold abroad. But thanks to the foundation «Links of time» some of them came back to Russia.
