St. Peter and Paul’s Fortress is the place where the city began in 1703. Inside it there is a Cathedral with the same name that occupies a special place among the churches of St. Petersburg. It is also the highest historical building in the city center. This cathedral used to be a burial place for Russian Tzar Family beginning from the time of Peter the Great. Peter the Great was the first to be buried in the unfinished building of this Cathedral. At the end of the 20 c. in Peter and Paul’s Cathedral the family of our last Emperor Nicolas II was reburied. The tradition to bury the members of the ruling dynasty at one place or at some cathedral, widespread throughout the world, was followed in St. Petersburg, too.
