International Discovery channel is shooting a video about Saint-Petersburg subway/metro. Are you surprised? At the very beginning all tourists feel a little bit puzzled when we add visiting several subway stations to their tour. They usually understand the reason after the visit to our subway.
This film will tell about some unique stations of the closed type, that appeared first in Leningrad (Soviet name of Saint-Petersburg), about one of our deepest subway stations “Admiralteyskaya”, about the stations that were made first, about the most beautiful ones and some other interesting facts.
Saint Petersburg’s subway is the second largest underground railway system in Russia. It was founded during the Soviet time in 1955. That time the first line (red) connected five railway stations. Nowadays Saint-Petersburg subway has five lines (each one has its own color) and about seventy subway stations. Almost all of them have escalators that go deep in average for 50-60 meters. Only few stations have staircases that lead to platforms, to electrical trains. All stations are decorated richly with marble, mosaics, stained-glass windows, moldings and beautiful chandeliers. Everyone notices they are also very clean.
We are offering you to include subway/metro visit to any of chosen tours from our site as a compliment. During the tour your private Saint-Petersburg guide will choose and show you some of the subway stations. To start your subway adventure your private guide will buy tokens (zheton) for you when entering the station, and then you will use an escalator to reach the platform and then you will admire the inner interior of the station. Taking pictures was prohibited in the past, but recently this restriction has been removed. Do not forget your camera!
